I’m Candice Black, a visual artist & writer from South Wales, UK. As a mixed race, disabled, Welsh, female: my creative work has been a life line through challenging experiences.
I work in a range of media including painting, photography, textiles, print, collage, performance, video, poetry and prose.
I explore trauma and somatic themes in my artwork, drawing on my own experiences and taking influence from others.
I create art-works that express Emotion, Race, Sexuality, Guilt, Innocence, Tenderness, Faith, Hate, Women, Hell, Handwriting, Crimes against humanity, Crazy, Fear, Underwear, Feminine craft, Self-expression, Revelation, Anger, Stream of consciousness, Periods in my life, Politics, Rebellion, Alchemy, Abuse, Symbols, Visual motifs, Powers, Oppression, Mental illness, Anxiety, Violence of physical restraint, Survival, Internet, Social political systems, Narrative, and Transcendence.
I believe in creativity, empowerment, and the human spirit. I do what I do because creativity benefits the individual, groups, and wider society.
I’m from Wales, and have lived in England whilst attending college and university. I studied fashion and textiles, before moving into art and becoming an artist.
Art and artists have inspired me since I was a child, when I would visit museums as a little girl. I was grounded in art by community artists who would work with me to use a variety of materials to produce art that often went on display locally. In recent years, I have focused on trauma as a personal experience, and how it relates to the mind and body.
