The Scary Bit

Happy 1st of October to you, dear reader! Yes, it’s the start of a new month, which means it’s time for a new blog post from ArtStudioCB.

This month we celebrate Halloween on 31st October, and I’ve been preparing. I love this time of year, where our liminal worlds collide and the veil between the two gets thinner.

What are you planning for this season? Have you enjoyed the start to autumn? Halloween is an opportunity to prepare for the winter months ahead and explore spirituality.

It’s also a great time for creativity. From simple cut out ghosts made of paper, to skilled carved pumpkins, the important bit is to remember to have fun.

Now for the scary bit. Artificial intelligence is, apparently, going to put us artist’s out of a job. From AI illustrations to AI Actors who will seemingly replace people who do this work, we’re supposed to be quaking in our boots.

Whilst I admit, some examples of this are kind of scary, such as ‘AI Actor’ Tilly Norwood: I personally have decided to draw a line in the sand. Artificial Intelligence can not create art because art and being an artist is a human endeavour. What AI produces is a computer generated amalgamation of lots of others peoples work, at best an imitation.

Whilst supporters of AI seem to want us to believe that we are all out of a job soon, I know that people crave connection through art- not to a robot- but to other people.

Why any one would want to work against that and create this synthetic imitation, I don’t know.

In other news, I have recently realised that my art practice is growing and expanding, and I am trying to keep up.

There have been a lot of personal events to address, and I have experienced a bout of stress. I have support and I’m figuring out new ways to work and manage.

I’m planning towards upcoming events, and when I have more news of those I will post. Please do follow the newsletter for more updates.

Finally, the fifth instalment of Art Making Zine will be available shortly. I will update this post and link to it on my social media channels when it is ready.

I’m wishing you a fantastic October and enjoy Halloween! I will be back on 1st November.
